Wall hung vs. floor based systems

Your upper kitchen cabinets are 'wall hung' and loaded with heavy things, but never fall down because they are installed properly. Same goes for wall hung closet systems, install them properly and there are no worries.

The difference that matters is 'The Look'.

When vertical panels extend from floor to top shelf, the system has more eye appeal.

Proper floor based systems are supported on a level and recessed pedastal base. Most companies just stand the vertical panels on the floor. If the floor is not level their new closet is also 'not level'. Or else there are little pieces of cardboard shimming up the verticals.

Shoddy methods get my thumbs down vote, call me and you will have no worries.

Maybe you came to this site because there is something wrong with your closet, it's not your fault.

Someone with limited creativity deserves the criticism..

If you can't see it, reach it, or find it, you won't be wearing it.

That's a shame because you bought your clothes to wear, not to warehouse. Having access issues is like walking around with your shoes untied, it just feels wrong.

Embrace the space.. all of it.

Create the closet design that uses all available wall space. Connect the top shelves when turning corners.

It's another place to put something personal.

Extra high ceilings call out for extra high shelving.

If your closet really is too small- plan for first things first.

Items that should be hung and shoes usually get first priority, followed by foldables that go on flat shelves. Drawers and hampers are included last of all, if there is room. You can always put a dresser or hamper basket in your bedroom.

You deserve a treat.

The final element to consider is the level of beauty that you're about to surround yourself with. A hall linen closet need not be anything but functional. Your walk-in closet on the other hand is a candidate for some primping. No one will see it but you...every single day, and you are the most important person to consider. Treat yourself to some upgrades like moulding at the top, valet rods, a velour jewelry insert, raised end panels, solid wood dove-tailed drawers.

Attractive drawer handles make a BIG difference, they are like jewelry for your closet.

Make it a personal retreat, a place to get quiet, play with outfits, try on your jewels and prepare for adventuring into the world outside.

Low price without high quality is no bargain.

If you pay 35% less, do you get 35% less of something? Of course. Underspending is not a good strategy when it comes to any home improvement.

Your home is probably your best investment vehicle these days, since Wall Street became too uncertain. Don't under invest in cheap improvements.

Standard 3/4"melamine shelves are ideal for closet applications. Any 5/8" thick shelves are going to bend with a lighter load than a 3/4" shelf which is a whopping 20% thicker. They sell 'em, I don't.

There are differences to consider in closet rods, drawer slides, baskets, and drawer pulls. Be willing to pay a small price premium if you can appreciate a ball bearing drawer slide that is 'full extension', allowing full access to the back of the drawer. They come standard on all of my drawers.

If you pay $35. for a valet rod is it a cheap one or a top quality version? Did you actually try one in a show room or did you just see a picture? They are not all the same quality. Back in the day there was only one choice, those days are gone. Visit a show room, see the real products.
